FAQs

When and where do you meet?

Every Monday evening from 7:15 - 10:00 pm in Drumoak Church Hall (Map).

I love to sing, but I can't read music. Will that stop me from being able to join?

No. Whilst there are members within the chorus who can read music, or can sight read, the majority of our members cannot. We learn our new songs by listening to a 'learning' tape. Members are given a CD with their voice part on it and we practise at home.

Do I have to audition?

Yes, but this is not so bad. We are there to help and encourage you.  You have two options available to you. You can either sing into your tape recorder on the risers or, if you prefer, sing along with three other voice parts in a quartet.

After I become a member, what happens next?

Within our chorus, we have Section Leaders who are there to help you with your songs if you have difficulty with them. All Chorus members hand in tapes of the songs that they learn so that the Section Leader can check them and correct any words or notes.

Is Sweet Adelines expensive to join?

When you initially join, it costs about £40 ($80) to register with the international organisiation. This is a one-off payment, after which you simply pay your Chorus dues (£15 a month). Occasionally you will be asked by the Costume chairperson to pay for some items of costume.

Will I ever learn all the songs?

Yes, it's surprising how fast you will learn with the teach CDs provided. We all have different rates at which we learn songs and newer members are learning all the time, not everyone knows the current repertoir.  We may also hold extra Section rehearsals from time-to-time so that members can ask about any problem notes they may be having with the songs they are learning.

I don't drive, so how will I get to rehearsal?

Within the chorus, we have many drivers who are willing to help those who have difficulty in getting to rehearsal.

Should I join?

Yes. Not only will you learn quickly to become part of our fun-loving and friendly group, you will also have the opportunity to learn more about our style of singing through various educational events and at our annual competition.
